A fourth-generation family business with a long heritage in the production and marketing of food products dating back to 1903 in Salerno, Southern Italy. Coppola Foods are shining a light on their standout heritage product, San Marzano D.O.P Tomatoes (£2.20 per 400g can), newly available to purchase from Italian specialist online store, Gourmica (www.gourmica.co.uk)
The Coppola family has been growing and preserving tomatoes in sunny Southern Italy for four generations, since 1903 when Gerardo Coppola established a food trading and serving business in Mercato San Severino, Salerno. In 1952 Ernesto Coppola Sr began canning on a grander scale and exporting the ripe and flavourful San Marzano tomatoes grown only in the area between Naples and Salerno.
Today, the Coppolas continue to be passionate about food, delivering authentic Italian staples that are the cornerstones of the Mediterranean diet. All products are produced in Italy, using only all-natural, high-quality ingredients. Good Italian cuisine is about fresh and natural ingredients that are simply prepared. Coppola Foods’ traditional Italian food products are the basis for real and authentic Italian cooking to be enjoyed every day with family and friends as part of a well-balanced lifestyle.
Coppola Foods’ San Marzano Tomatoes of Agro Sarnese-Nocerino P.D.O are tomatoes grown in sun-drenched Campania in an area between the provinces of Naples, Salerno and Avellino, known for its fertile volcanic soil, enriched by Mount Vesuvius, a high water table and ideal Mediterranean microclimate. These tomatoes are cultivated vertically, using wires attached to wooden supports, and are harvested manually between the summer months of August and September. They are then attentively sorted, steam peeled and packed in their tomato juice. These tomatoes are plump, finely textured and very sweet with a very subtle amount of acidity. This combination creates a perfectly balanced tomato as the base for a tomato sauce, which makes them the top choice of the very best Italian and international chefs and pizza chefs; lauded chef and TV personality, James Martin called them, “Special…beautiful…lovely Italian tomatoes”.
Coppola San Marzano Tomatoes are PDO (protected designation of origin) certified – meaning that they can only be grown in this region of Southern Italy – in the same way that Champagne is exclusively grown in north-eastern France; each can has a unique identification number for added authenticity. No sugar or sweeteners necessary; the tomatoes are free from artificial flavours, thickeners, or firming agents and they’re packaged in BPA-free cans.
Coppola Foods’ San Marzano tomatoes are ideal for a very special pasta sauce, pizza, soup, or simple topping for ciabatta bread, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. Available nationwide now from Coppola Foods’ brand new one-stop-shop for gourmet Italian produce, Gourmica, as well as via Amazon.
